Plasma Renin Activity in Cirrhosis

Abstract
To evaluate the status of renin-angiotensin axis in 15 patients with cirrhosis and ascites including 5 unexplained renal failure who were on an unrestricted sodium intake, plasma renin activity was determined by Cohn¢¥s bioassay method modifed from the technique of Regoli and Vane using the isolated rat ascending colon.
1. Mean plasma renin activity in 10 normal subjects was 6.0¡¾2.0ng/ml.
2. Mean plasma renin activity in 10 patients with cirrhosis and was 15.-0¡¾8.7ng/ml and exceeds significantly as compased with those of control group.
3. Mean plasma renin activity in 5 patient with the so-called hepatorenal syndrome was 36¡¾6.9ng/ml and was significantly higher than control group and patients with cirrhosis.
4. Plasma renin activity in patient "with cirrhosis was significantly correlated with glomerular -filt¡© ration rate and effective renal plasma flow.
These results suggest that increased plasma renin activity seems to be the result circulatory impairment in cirrhosis rather than its causes, aggravate fluid retention and largely responsible for the perpetuation of ascites.
